Time’s up on Windows CE and Windows Mobile OS.
What’s Your Plan?

For nearly twenty years, the operating system (OS) of choice for enterprise mobile computers has been Microsoft CE and Windows Mobile, powering over 15 million+ rugged mobile devices.  Starting in January 2020, Microsoft is ending all forms of support for Windows CE and Windows Mobile OS versions with no clear migration path forward.  With only 15% of the programming code being forward compatible with Windows 10 IoT Mobile Enterprise, any native applications will have to be redeveloped and recoded.

Any business currently using devices with Windows Mobile or Windows CE should start to plan for the future now.  Depending on the size and complexity of your business, a solution may not be simple nor cheap.  Preparing your OS migration or upgrade strategy now will prevent headaches later, and more importantly, won’t interfere with your business.

WINDOWS

End Of Support Starting in April 2018

“End of Support” and “End of Life” means that Microsoft will stop issuing security patches and software updates. It doesn’t mean that your devices will stop working or shut down in 2020. However, it does mean that if you run into a problem or if there is a new security flaw is identified,  Microsoft will no longer provide updates and patches to the operating system.  If you are still in the planning phases for enterprise migration or updates, you are faced with no easy solution to defend your system from viruses, fix software bugs, or add new apps & features to your current devices.

  • January 14, 2020 – Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 will be End of Life
  • In 2021 Microsoft is ending support for Windows Embedded 7

ANDROID

Consider Android?

Android is the leading smartphone operating system with approximately 80% market share.  With its origins firmly rooted in consumer mobile devices, Android has made significant inroads as an enterprise mobile platform suitable for business-critical mobile applications.  Since 2010 a vast amount of work has gone into optimizing Android for enterprise usage.  Supported by a massive development community across the globe, Android is incredibly agile and easy to customize.  With a familiar operating system user interface Android is a simple transition path for your workforce.

Depending on your handhelds in-use in your enterprise now, some of your Zebra and Honeywell handheld models may have the option of installing Android onto the existing device.  This option is device specific. Contact us to learn more about which devices are supported.

WATCH AND WAIT ON TRENDS

Looking for the ability to use an enterprise feature set? Concerned about application compatibility, security or device management?

Moving applications to a new OS can be a long and expensive process.  But with 2020 just two years away, waiting to see which operating system takes over for enterprises can leave you exposed to security flaws and possible slow downs and stoppages in your work flows.  Postponing the decision to upgrade your enterprise handheld devices can lead to significantly higher costs of support and ownership. Considering that these devices support business critical operations, any device failure leads to a loss in productivity and operational disruptions impacting customer and worker satisfaction.
